Who says inanimate objects don’t bring happiness? Cookies do. They always have and always will. The reason why cookies have survived in our world is because it doesn’t discriminate, despite having 100+ varieties. For all people (except ones with celiac disease. Gluten free diet is the way to a healthy life for you!).
Now I’m one who usually dabbles in cakes, but who can resist the pull of Mariah Carey’s voice singing “All I want for Christmas is you” and hearing the ‘sleigh bells Ringling ring-ringa jingling (I know you’re singing it in your head, it’s okay, you’re not alone). That Christmas environment just makes me yearn for them cookies. You and cookies can be two magnetic forces, a bond so strong that even the grinch wouldn’t dare to pull you two apart. So, while the rest of my house is engrossed in making fruit and rum cakes, I make batches of cookies enough to feed my friends and some more. Now you may wonder, just friends? Either she has none or has very few of them. Let me help you there. I have lot, a lot, of friends who have their own friends and so on.
Enough to fill a small village and each person with a stomach suitable for a baby tyrannosaurus… I love all cookies, no discrimination. Swear on the cookie monster. But my hypocritic self-can’t help but to favor and salivate on hearing Cinnamon Roll cookies. Simply writing about it sends my brain into a delicious, dazed frenzy. Those cookies are my achilles heel. In this battle of waterloo, my determination to eat healthy dons the form of Napoleon Bonaparte with cookies portraying Russia and its icing the Russian snow. It was love at first bite and it all began 2 years ago on 23 rd December 2016. The memory fresh as those cookies had been.
It was my first (and successful) time doing Christmas cookies. A simple recipe, the first batch was out after a 15 min visit in the oven. And when they came out, the wafting fragrance almost made me wish I could drown in it. Almost. When they cooled down, expectant looks from my family urged me to take a bite. I was to be the tester, as always. But one bite of that and realization hit me like a ton of bricks. Apparently, heaven did exist on Earth. Even if only on our tongue for a few minutes.
So, I ate the whole batch up, save some for the family and made a new one for my friends. I’ve been doing the same thing every Christmas since. Now, the festival season doesn’t mean that you throw caution to the wind and forget about your health. Santa or no, your body knows when you’re being naughty or nice. Luckily for me and you, cinnamon has many health benefits such as being an anti-oxidant, having anti-fungal and anti-bacterial properties and reducing blood sugar levels.
But excess of anything is harmful, our beloved cinnamon included. So, this Christmas, believe in the magic of cookies and find out your favorite. Keep experimenting. I trust it wouldn’t be that tricky for a smart cookie like you!
